A new study is showing a link between Viagra and depression, as well as the use of Viagra-based treatments in the UK.

“This is the first study to show that sildenafil and tadalafil are similar in their effect on depression,” said study co-author Dr. Thomas C. Ricks, M. D., a urologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Viagra and depression are used to treat erectile dysfunction and impotence, the researchers said.“We have found that these drugs may reduce depression, sexual dysfunction, and anxiety symptoms,” Dr. Ricks said in the press release. “These findings highlight the need for further research to explore the underlying mechanisms of these drugs and their potential adverse effects on depression.”
Viagra, also known as sildenafil, is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
It belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
PDE5 inhibitors work by preventing the body from breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate, a molecule that regulates blood flow to the penis.
In women, the drug, called sildenafil, was shown to improve vaginal and urinary flow in some studies.
“This effect is thought to be related to the increase in nitric oxide synthase levels, which is a key regulator of erectile function,” Dr. Ricks said. “The PDE5 inhibitors improve vaginal and urinary flow by directly increasing nitric oxide synthase levels in the corpus cavernosum, which are responsible for maintaining penile erections.”
“Our findings suggest that sildenafil may be effective in treating female sexual dysfunction in a relatively small number of patients,” he added.
